ALICE JONES
Alice Marie Scandrett Jones, 86, of Fremont, a native of Grinnell, died of cancer Saturday, Aug. 17, at St. Francis Manor.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at Fremont Funeral Chapel. Graveside services were held at Hazelwood Cemetery here.
The daughter of William and Matilda Evans Scandrett, she was born Nov. 21, 1909, in Grinnell. She was a 1928 graduate of Grinnell High School. She was married to Alvan Boyle Jones Sept. 21, 1935, in Grinnell. He died in 1981.
Prior to her marriage, she was employed at Brintnalls in Grinnell for seven years. She and her husband operated the Fremont Gazette until July 1973. The couple also worked with Mr. Jones's brother, Ralph, in publishing the Hedrick Journal, and in 1964 they added the Oskaloosa Tribune Press to the business. The Tribune Press was consolidated with the Gazette in January 1968.
Mrs. Jones was a member of the Ottumwa and Oskaloosa support groups for the visually impaired, the Grinnell First Baptist Church, Altrusa Internatioanl of Oskaloosa and the Fremont United Methodist Women. She and her husband were instrumental in organizing the Akerman Museum.
Surviving is a sister, Dorothy Farmer of Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three half-sisters, Lulu Morrison, Bernice Sheffield and Esther Carter; and one half-brother, Milton Scandrett.
Memorials may be made to the Fremont United Methodist Church or the Grinnell First Baptist Church.
