DROWNING VICTIMGary Newton, 25, drowned early Saturday in a quarry near Fairfax in southwest Linn county. Newton, an employed of Manatt's, had been working with a crew on a Linn county road.
Authorities said the body was recovered by two scuba divers in 20 feet of water about 15 feet from the shoreline. Details of the accident, which took place shortly before 2 a.m., were not available.
The son of Ray and Leona Newton, Gary Lee Newton was born July 29, 1941, and had lived most of his life in Brooklyn where he attended school. He was married Nov. 2, 1963, to Edna Rhodes.
He is survived by his wife, Edna of Brooklyn; his mother, Mrs. Leona Newton of Brooklyn; a sister, Mary Sue Newton of Jackson Heights, N.Y., and a brother, Robert Joseph Newton of Brooklyn. His father and two brothers, Roger and Richard, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock at First United Presbyterian church with the Rev. George Roquet officiating. Mrs. Ed Bartachek was organist.
Burial was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery at Brooklyn with the following serving as pallbearers: Keith McCammant, Alan Slagle, Jerry DeVilder, Jerry Tarvin, Jack Means and Karl Bush. In charge of flowers were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gerard, Mr. and Mrs. Clark Tarvin and Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Kriegel.
