Nellie Sams, 83, of Montezuma, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at Friendship Manor in Grinnell.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008 at Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery in Montezuma. Memorials may be made to Grinnell Regional Hospice.
Nellie Ida Sams, daughter of Charles and Zeta Rhinehart Newton was born June 21, 1925, in Brooklyn. She was a 1943 graduate of Brooklyn High School. Shortly after high school, Nellie was united in marriage with Henry Adrian Sams on June 25, 1943, in Brooklyn. Together they moved to Long Beach, Calif., where her husband was stationed at Muroc Air Base during World War II. While living in Long Beach, she was the personal assistant to the commander of the Port of Embarkation. In 1945, they returned to Montezuma and built their home. She worked at the Monte Cafe for a couple of years and then for Alexander Drug for over 30 years until retiring in 1974. The Sams loved to travel. After retirement, they traveled to Alaska twice and attended several World War II reunions. She was a member of the Women's Study Club, a Past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star and Womens Club.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Harold "Jerry" Newton; her sister, Helen Kubu, and one nephew.
