HENRY ADRIAN SAMS, 87

Henry Adrian Sams, 87, of Montezuma, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 22, at Watts Funeral Home, Montezuma, with the Rev. Jo Hary of the Montezuma Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Masonic-IOOF Cemetery in Montezuma. Friends may call at the funeral home after 12:30 p.m. The family will be present from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Watts Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of the arrangements.

Adrian, the son of Henry Madison Sams and Phebe Minner, was born Dec. 16, 1918 in Poweshiek County in the Forest Home area. He graduated from Montezuma High School with the class of 1938. Adrian served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps. On June 25, 1943, Adrian was united in marriage with Nellie Ida Newton in Brooklyn, Iowa. He worked as a carpenter for Wheeler Construction for 30 years. Adrian was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 53 years; the American Legion and the Eagles Lodge. He enjoyed being outdoors, splitting wood, hunting, gardening and traveling. He was an avid stamp collector and pen collector.

Adrian was preceded in death by his parents; his five brothers, Ellis, Melvin, Marvin, Junior and Virgil; and a half brother, Omer Fry.

Those left to honor Adrian's memory include his wife, Nellie Sams of Montezuma; his sister, Zella Beal of Washington, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.
