James Frederick Kubu, 59, of Brooklyn, the founder of Victor Plastics, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center, of injuries sustained after a tree fell on him on his property.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Victor, with the Rev. Richard Okumu, the Rev. William Reynolds, and the Rev. Stephen Page officiating. Organist will be Angie Radcliffe and cantors will be members of the Mike Smith family. Casket bearers will be Jack Cavanaugh, Richard and Roger DeGeeter, Rod Felton, Lonny Koehn, Benny Maier, Larry Oleson and Steve Sawyer. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Victor.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at St. Bridget's Catholic Church. A scripture service will be 8 p.m. that evening at the church.
Memorials may be directed to Alzheimer's Research or to the Brooklyn-Victor Country Club.
Mr. Kubu was born July 24, 1943, in Grinnell, the son of Frederick T. and Helen A. (Newton) Kubu. He was raised in the in the Victor area and graduated from St. John's School in Victor with the Class of 1961. He then served with the U.S. Marine Corp.
On Jan. 7, 1967, he married Linda D. Sebetka in Tama.
They lived in the Victor area and he worked in tool and die departments of various Eastern Iowa companies. In 1981, he founded Victor Plastics. He later became CEO of companies in Victor, Kalona and North Liberty.
He belonged to St. Bridget's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Victor Fire Department, National Rifle Association and a Corvette club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and chopping wood. He also enjoyed his grandchildren, golfing and trap shooting.
He is survived by his wife, Linda D. Kubu of Brooklyn; three daughters, Crystal DeNeve and Sherry Mertens, both of Victor, and Jennifer Teslow of Dubuque; five grandchildren; and a sister, Cindy Kubu of Iowa City.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
