Funeral services for Helen A. Kubu, 67, of Victor, were held on Thursday, at 11 a.m. at St. Bridget Catholic Church. Mrs. Kubu died on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1986 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a sudden illness.
The celebrant of the funeral mass was The Rev. Eugene Hoenig, pastor of St. Bridget Catholic Church. The concelebrant was the Rev. Msgr. E.C. Greer, pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney.
The organist was Mrs. William Lynch of Victor and the lector was Robert Murtha of Victor. Altar boys were Rick DeNeve and Joel Gryp, both of Victor.
Concluding services and burial were held at Calvary Cemetery at Victor with Eugene Blount, John Gryp, Jeffrey Verdeck and Francis DeMeulenaere, all of Victor, and Wesley Sebetka, Jr. of Malcom and Steven Sebetka of Belle Plaine, serving as casket bearers.
Helen Arlene Newton was born Jan. 16, 1919 at Guernsey, Ia. She was the daughter of Charles and Zeta (Rhinehart) Newton.
She grew to womanhood in Poweshiek County, Iowa, and graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1938.
On Sept. 1, 1941, she was united in marriage to Fred Kubu at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Brooklyn. To their marriage were born two children -- James and Cindy. They established their home in Victor and this was her home at the time of her death.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Helen is survived by her husband -- Fred, one son -- James (and his wife, Linda) of Victor, one daughter -- Cindy Kubu of Iowa City, three granddaughters -- Crystal, Sherry and Jennifer Kubu, one sister -- Nellie, Mrs. Adrian Sams of Montezuma and one brother -- Harold (Jerry) and his wife Edna Newton of Brooklyn.
