HAROLD "JERRY" NEWTON

Harold "Jerry" Newton, 80, of Brooklyn, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center, Grinnell, Ia.

Funeral services for Jerry Newton were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at the Nevenhoven Funeral Home. Mr. Dennis Smith, Minister of the Madison Church of Christ, officiated. The organist was Jan Read and the soloist was Patty Lang.

Honorary casket-bearers were Mike Clayton, Fred Van Renterghem, Dean Downey, Harley Sorenson, Orville Garringer and Eugene Rhinehart. Members of Francis Gallagher American Legion Post #294 conducted military rites. Interment was in Hartwick Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.

Harold "Jerry" Eugene Newton, son of Charles and Zeta Rinehart Newton, was born Aug. 16, 1920, on a farm near Guernsey, Ia. Jerry was a graduate of the Brooklyn High School and Cedar Rapids Barber School.

Mr. Newton was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He entered March 21, 1942, and was discharged Dec. 1, 1945. He was recalled to active duty on Jan. 11, 1947 and released to inactive reserve duty Sept. 23, 1947 being discharged Oct. 26, 1954. Jerry enlisted to the Naval Reserve Oct. 27, 1954 and was discharged Oct. 26, 1958.

On Dec. 30, 1947, Mr. Newton was married to Edna Marie Reese Smith at the Methodist Church, Montezuma. They were the parents of three daughters, Jeanne, Kathryn and Mary. Edna died May 24, 1999.

Jerry operated barber shops in Brooklyn, Guthrie Center, Hartwick and Victor and operated the Hartwick store.

Jerry was a member of Madison Church of Christ, Francis Gallagher American Legion Post #294, and Iowa River Campers of which he was a charter member.

Surviving are three daughters, Jeanne Sisson and her husband, Michael, of Cedar Rapids, Katy Rhinehart and her husband, Eugene, of Ferguson and Mary Newton, Bishop, Calif.; one sister, Nellie Sams of Montezuma; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one sister, Helen Kubu; a grandson, Christopher Charles Rhinehart.
