Funeral services were held Thursday morning, May 27, at the Madison Church of Christ, rural Brooklyn, for Mrs. Edna M. Newton, 81, of Brooklyn, who died Monday afternoon, May 24, 1999, in her home at Brooklyn.

Mr. Dennis Smith, minister of the church, officiated. The organist was Jan Read and the soloist was Patty Lang. A special selection was "Ivory Palaces." The congregational hymn was "Old Rugged Cross." Casket bearers were Miles Clayton, Heath Rhinehart, Frankie Dinatalli, Gene Rhinehart, Shane Rolfe and Tim Siemens. Interment was in the Hartwick Cemetery, Hartwick. Nevenhoven Funeral Services, Brooklyn, was in charge of arrangements.

Edna Marie Reese Newton, daughter of William Herman and Emma Helena Petersen Reese, was born Dec. 14, 1917, on a farm east of Anamosa. She graduated from Anamosa High School in 1935, and was a student at Iowa State Teacher's College, Cedar Falls, that year. Before her marriage, Edna taught in rural schools in Jones and Cedar counties.

She was married to Earl Keith Smith on Nov. 22, 1941, and they were farmers. They had one daughter, Barbara Ann. Mr. Smith died Dec. 23, 1946, and Barbara died Dec. 25, 1946. There was a double funeral for them on Dec. 26, 1946.

Edna married Harold Eugene "Jerry" Newton on Dec. 30, 1947, in the chapel of the Methodist church, Montezuma. To this union, three daughters were born, Jeanne, Kathryn and Mary.

Edna graduated with a BA in special education from UNI in May of 1972. With Jerry, she helped in the barber shop and helped run two different stores in Hartwick. She helped build their Holiday Lake home and taught elementary math in the BGM schools.

She was a member of the Madison Church of Christ, Francis Gallagher American Legion Post #294 Auxiliary for 52 years, and the Iowa River Campers, of which she was a charter member. She was a retired volunteer of the Veterans Hospital, Iowa City, with over 2800 hours of work.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, her daughter, Barbara, and one grandson, Christopher Charles Rhinehart.

Edna is survived by her husband, Jerry; three daughters, Jeanne Sisson and her husband, Michael, of Cedar Rapids, Katy Rhinehart and her husband, Eugene, of Ferguson, and Mary Newton of Flagstaff, Ariz.; three sisters, Wilma Kubu of Cedar Rapids, Esther Mae Rexroat of Cedar Rapids, and Wanita Broessel of Dubuque; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
