EFFIE MAY HOCUM

Effie May Wylie, daughter of John and Ellen Wylie, was born near Gilman, July 23, 1883, and died at Iowa Falls at 7:30 Sunday evening, Aug. 7, following an operation in the hospital for adhesions, at 12:30. She was 44 years of age.

After some years of residence at Gilman she moved with her family to Grinnell where the advantages of a higher education were possible. Here Miss Wylie attended college. With her talent for music she, at the time, rendered valuable service to both the college and the church. In 1910 she was married to Martin O. Hocum, also of Grinnell. To this union two daughters, Avis and Helen, were born. The family moved to Iowa Falls in 1922. Mrs. Hocum was consistently interested in the best things of life. She was a true mother and kind neighbor.

For some years Mrs. Hocum's health has been impaired so as to prevent her taking an active part in many activities in which she by nature had an interest. Few, however, realized the seriousness of her condition, and her death Sunday evening came as a great shock to all who knew her. In her immediate family Mrs. Hocum is survived by her husband and two daughters, Avis, aged 13, and Helen, aged 8. She also leaves three brothers, James L. and William R. of Gilman and Roy of Colorado Springs.

The funeral was held at 2:30 Tuesday. Following prayer at the home services were held at the Congregational church, the pastor, Rev. Cruishman, being in charge, assisted by Rev. J.A. Caskey of Gilman. The attendance was large, and there were banks of flowers. At the grave the Eastern Star, of which Mrs. Hocum was organist, had charge of the service. Burial was in the Iowa Falls cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Wylie and daughter, Miss Harriette, Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Wylie and daughters, Misses Julietta and Effie, Rev. and Mrs. J.A. Caskey and Mrs. S.E. Parker of Gilman, Mrs. David Paul and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Rutherford of Grinnell, and Misses Elizabeth and Sadie Lowry of Marshalltown attended the funeral.--Gilman Dispatch.
