PHYLLIS HOPKINS, 86

Phyllis Hopkins, 86, of Montezuma, passed away Saturday, June 27, 2009, at the Montezuma Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 2, at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home. Burial was in the Jackson Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital or the Montezuma Fire Department. Online condolences may be given at hollandcoblefuneralhome.com.

Phyllis Louise Hopkins, daughter of Dale and Opal Beatty Douglass, was born Sept. 14, 1922, in Browntown. She was a 1940 graduate of the Montezuma Community High School. On May 15, 1941, she married Ben Hopkins. They had three children. After Ben's death in 1982, Phyllis spent many years traveling to Arizona in the winter where she enjoyed the company of many new friends in the Citrus Gardens Mobile Park. She loved to visit family, was active in the Poweshiek County Historical & Genealogical Society, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the China-Burma-India Veterans Associations.

Phyllis is survived by two sons, Don (Carolyn) Hopkins and Ken Hopkins; a daughter, Karen (George) Stuart; two brothers, Bob (Corinne) Douglass of Eagleville, Tenn., and Bill (Virginia) Douglass of Montezuma; sister-in-law, Lois Douglass of Montezuma; brother-in-law, Bill Benjamin of Arizona; four grandchildren, Jay (Kari) Hopkins, Eric (Sheryl) Hopkins, Bradley (Tiffany) Hopkins, Casey (Holly) Hopkins; seven great-grandchildren, Allison, Ben, Elaine, Annette, Landry, Reese and Elsie.

Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ben; a brother, Gene Douglass; and a twin brother, Philip. who died at birth.
