ELMER CARL RITES HELD TUESDAY

Funeral services for Elmer H. Carl were held Tuesday afternoon, May 24, at the Montezuma Methodist Church with the Rev. Howard Hayes officiating. Mrs. Vincent Johnson was soloist at the services accompanied by Miss Alice Underwood, organist.

Interment was in Jackson Township Cemetery with Dale Johnston, Claire Gregory, R.J.H. Badger, Carl Cummings, Gerald Whisenand and Stanley Hutchinson serving as casket bearers.

Mr. Carl, 63, died Saturday, May 21, in St. Francis Hospital, Grinnell, after an extended illness.

The son of Henry and Anna Carl, he was born near Geneseo, Ill., on Sept. 20, 1902. In 1907 the Carl family moved to a farm near Deep River where he attended rural school. After the family moved to a farm east of Montezuma he attended school in Montezuma and graduated with the class of 1921.

He assumed the responsibility of helping his mother manage the farm and in the rearing of his younger sisters and brother after his father died in 1922. He and his brother maintained the family home for their mother until her death in 1951.

On May 23, 1952, he married Martha Barber Ames. They made their home in Montezuma.

Mr. Carl was a clerk at the Montezuma Sale Barn for 16 years and served as a township trustee and other civic jobs. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Elks Lodge in Oskaloosa.

He is survived by his wife, Martha; four sisters, Mrs. Edna Burdine of Newark, Ohio, Mrs. Esther Hartsell of Tama, Mrs. Alice Smith and Mrs. Melba Swanson, both of Montezuma; one brother, Cloyd Carl of Montezuma; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.
