Alonzo Owen Dies
Cancer of the Stomach Causes Death of Local Resident
Alonzo Owen, a resident of Marshalltown since 1919, passed away at 8:10 this morning at his home, 1106 South First avenue. Death was caused by cancer of the stomach. He had been in poor health the last year and had been confined to his bed for the last week.
Mr. Owen was born Jan. 17, 1860, in Scranton, Pa., and when 5 years old, moved with his parents to Brooklyn, where he married Miss Mariam Dunbar, Feb. 5, 1879. Six years later they moved to McCook, Neb., remaining there for several years. In 1918 the Owen family moved to Marshalltown where they have since resided. His is survived by his widow and six children, Mrs. E. C. Gooding, city; Mrs. M. H. Legg, St. Joseph, Mo; Mrs. J. Wheeler, Montezuma; Archie Owen, city; Mrs. Clifford Jones, Malcom, and Mrs. R. L. Robinson, city. A foster son, Lloyd Strong, city, who the couple raised from a small boy; a brother, Clarence E. Owen, Hawaiian Islands; a sister, Mrs. Warren Tew, Chicago, thirty-three grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren also survive.
While in Brooklyn Mr. Owen was a switchman on the Rock Island railroad and he was a conductor on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy line at McCook. Since coming to Marshalltown in 1918 he has worked in the Chicago Great Western freight office.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. from the home and burial will be in a Brooklyn cemetery.
