NEW SHARON MAN DIES IN CRASH

A New Sharon man became Poweshiek County's first traffic fatality of the year Thursday afternoon when the car he was driving was stuck by another vehicle at the intersection of Iowa Highway 146 and county road F-37.

Richard L. McGriff, 67, was pronounced dead at the scene. Poweshiek County Sheriff Max Allen said McGriff was killed instantly.

The accident occurred when a car driven by Marjorie Oligschlaeger, 63, of Missouri westbound on the county road, ran a stop sign and struck the McGriff car, which was southbound on Highway 146.

McGriff's wife, Maxine, was taken to Mahaska Hospital and later transferred to University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Oligschlaeger, her husband and two passengers were treated and released.

She was charged with failure to stop at a stop sign. Both vehicles were demolished.

The accident was covered by State Trooper Robert Kisenth, Allen, and deputies Larry Wray and Steve Bruggeman.
