Maria Castner, 90, a former resident of New Sharon, died Saturday, Oct. 30, at the St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.
Funeral services for Maria Castner will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 2, at the Harden Funeral Home in New Sharon, with the Rev. Kevin Glesener of the New Sharon United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Friends Cemetery in New Sharon.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today (Monday) at the Harden Funeral Home. The family will be present from 9 a.m. until the services on Tuesday.
Lola Maria Castner was born on Oct. 31, 1913, in Poweshiek County to William H. and Nellie J. Evans McGriff. She was raised in Mahaska County and graduated from New Sharon High School in 1930.
On March 28, 1932, she married Charles B. "Chib" Castner in New Sharon.
She was a homemaker on the family farm near New Sharon for most of her life. She also worked at several area restaurants until she retired in 1975.
She was a member of the New Sharon United Methodist Church and was active in United Methodist Women. She enjoyed cooking.
She is survived by two daughters, Norma Gosselink of Grinnell and Patricia Fudge of Knoxville; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a granddaughter, Cindy; a step-brother William Playle; and a step-mother, Myrtle McGriff.
A memorial fund has been established to the New Sharon United Methodist Church.
