MR. SCANDRETTMilton E. Scandrett, 84, of 809 High St., Grinnell, died early Monday morning (Jan. 21) at University Hospitals in Iowa City, following hospitalization the past two months.
The son of William R. and Lucinda Smith Scandrett, he was born at Avoca, Iowa. His family moved to Grinnell while he was a young man, and he was graduated from Grinnell High School. He was a member of the class of 1913 at Grinnell College and later was graduated with a B.S. degree in agriculture in the Blue Earth, Minn., High School.
On Nov. 24, 1915, he was married to Clera Winifred Dillman at Blue Earth. The couple later moved to Indiana, where Mr. Scandrett served as county agriculture extension agent in Portland and Franklin. He was a charter member of the Indiana Farm Bureau.
In 1926, Mr. and Mrs. Scandrett moved to Grinnell where he was associated with Midwest Mineral Co. for many years. He also was an early hybrid seed corn researcher. Mr. Scandrett was a member of the First Baptist Church, a charter member of Alpha Chi Rho fraternity at Iowa State, and a member of the executive board of the Iowa Irrigators Association.
Survivors include five children, E. Dillman Scandrett of Titusville, Fla., Charles R. Scandrett of Fullerton, Calif., Dean M. Scandrett of San Antonio, Tex., Mrs. Gilbert E. (Ruth) Cox of Astoria, Ore., and Miss Marjorie Scandrett of Lakenheath, England; five granddaughters; four grandsons; five great-granddaughers; eight great-grandsons; two sisters, Mrs. John (Lulu) Morrison of Grinnell and Mrs. Bert (Bernice) Sheffield of Russell, Minn.; two half sisters, Mrs. C. Burrson (Dorothy) Farmer of Grinnell and Mrs. Alvan (Alice) Jones of Fremont; and one step-sister, Mrs. John (Esther) Carter of Grinnell.
He was preceded in death by his wife Clera, his parents, and one granddaughter.
Funeral services for Mr. Scandrett were held at 1:30 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Hugh A. Shiveley, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Organist was Mrs. Willard Heffner, and the pallbearers were Dennis Fleener, William Sheffield, Darrell Stimson, Paul Strovers, Martin Thomson, and David Ward.
Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.
