Funeral services for Sam Meldrem who died in Grinnell were held Monday afternoon from the Methodist church at Brooklyn with the Reverend E. W. F. Holler in charge.
Charles Samuel, youngest son of Thomas and Sabrina Bullock Meldrem, was born April 21, 1855, in Buchanan, Mich., and passed away at St. Francis hospital in Grinnell, Saturday, Feb. 13, 1937.
He had only been sick about three weeks and his death came as quite a shock to his family in Brooklyn. He had lived in and around Brooklyn for many years and was well known in this community.
When a small boy he went to Cortland, New York, where he lived until 1893 when he came to Brooklyn. Except two years spent in Webster, Ia., he lived in and around Brooklyn ever since coming to Iowa.
On March 17, 1896, he was united in marriage with Miss Aseneth Evans of Brooklyn. To this union three sons were born, Cecil A. of Grinnell, Ross W. of Montezuma and Kenneth of Guernsey.
Surviving are his wife, three sons, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Three brothers and one sister, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o’clock in Grace M.E. church in charge of the Rev. E. W. F. Holler. Mrs. Ray Anthony sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Going Down the Valley.” She was accompanied on the pipe organ by Mrs. C. H. Manatt.
The pall bearers were Ben York, Frank Dunton, Ira Patten, Bert McCulloch, Lige Newton and Bert Kann.
Interment was in the Brooklyn I.O.O.F. cemetery.
