VIRGINIA MOFFETT

Virginia Billings Moffett, 90, of 616 Broad St., Grinnell, died of cancer Mnday, Sept. 22, at the Mayflower Health Care Center.

A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday in the Activity Center of the Mayflower, with the Rev. Michael Smith, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Mrs. Moffett's body was donated to the College of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines. The Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was the daughter of William and Nelle Herstein Billings and was born Nov. 24, 1907, in Nashville, Tenn. She was raised in Nashville and graduated from a private academy. She also was a graduate of Ward Belmont Junior College in Nashville.

On Nov. 1, 1933, she was married to Dr. Alex Moffett in Nashville. They served as medical missionaries in China from 1935 to 1940. The family lived in North Carolina and Alabama. They moved to Taylorsville, N.C., in 1950, where Mrs. Moffett assisted her husband in his medical practice and raised her children. They retired in 1979 and lived in New York City and Florida before moving to the Mayflower in 1990.

Mrs. Moffett was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband; one son, Sandy of Grinnell; two daughters, Mary L. Jackson of Langhorne, Pa., and Penelope R. Sale of Cambridge, England; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Avalyn Henderson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Mayflower Human Needs Fund.
