OPAL SWATOSH

Opal Ann Swatosh, 76, of Grinnell died of a heart attack Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Friday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Ragula, pastor of the Brooklyn Grace United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was at Brooklyn Cemetery.

The daughter of Daniel and Nellie Smith McConnell, she was born Dec. 3, 1925, in Madison Township. She was raised in the Brooklyn area and was a graduate of Brooklyn High School.

She was married to Dale Swatosh July 2, 1945, in Grinnell. They lived in Victor, Sheridan Township and Madison Township. She moved to Grinnell in 1974.

Mrs. Swatosh was formerly employed at the Grinnell Shoe Factory and several restaurants in the Grinnell area prior to becoming a cook at the Longhorn Restaurant in 1971. She retired in 1997.

She was a member of the Heritage Club.

Surviving are her children, Emily Kephart of Brooklyn, Joyce Swatosh of Grinnell, Duane of Jasper, Mo., and Claire Swatosh and Cindi Powell, both of Joplin, Mo.; one brother, Daniel McConnell of Brooklyn; one sister, Alice Miller of Toledo; 12 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two children, Billy and Judith; one sister, Mildred Reimers; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

An Opal Ann Swatosh Memorial Fund has been established.
