RITES HELD FOR
MRS. MCCONNELL

Nellie Mae McConnell, 78, the wife of Daniel A. McConnell of 619 High St., Grinnell, died early Saturday, Jan. 25, at Grinnell General Hospital.

The daughter of William A. and Alice P. Dayton Smith, she was born June 1, 1896, in Madison Township, Poweshiek County. She attended rural school near her home. On Aug. 19, 1914, she was married to Daniel Andrew McConnell at the home of Dr. I.N. Busby in Brooklyn. Dr. Busby performed the ceremony. The couple had four children, Mrs. Harley (Mildred) Reimers of Brooklyn, Mrs. Herman (Alice) Miller of Toledo, Ms. Opal Swatosh of Grinnell and Dan McConnell Jr. of Brooklyn.

Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. McConnell farmed in Madison Township. In November, 1973, they moved to Grinnell to make their home with their daughter Opal. Mrs. McConnell was a member of the Madison Methodist Church, the Madison Ladies Aid, the Madison Grange, the Madison Homemakers Club, and the New Idea Club. She had also been a Madison 4-H leader.

She is survived by her husband Daniel; her four children; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Pete (Lois) Kline of Brooklyn; and one brother, Glenn Smith of Coolidge, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents; one granddaughter, Judith Swatosh; and a sister, Mrs. Nick (Goldie) Kline.

Funeral services for Mrs. McConnell were held at 1 p.m. today (Monday) at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. John W. McCallum, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Organist was Mrs. Willard Heffner, and flowerbearers were Mrs. Ernest Andes, Mrs. John Hand, and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Williams. Pallbearers were Ernest Andes, John W. Hall, Norman R. Hall, Franklin Hand, John Hand and LaVerne Hand. Burial was at Haven Cemetery near Tama.
