MARJORIE HUGHES, 91, SEARSBORO

Marjorie Hughes, 91, formerly of rural Searsboro, passed away Feb. 25, 2006, at the St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Private graveside services and burial will be held at Friends Cemetery in New Sharon with Rev. Kevin Glesener officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Searsboro or New Sharon Fire & Rescue Units.

Marjorie E. Fleener Hughes was born on Sept. 16, 1914, in New Sharon, the daughter of Samuel and Dr. Forest Phillips Fleener. She was a 1931 graduate of New Sharon High School and a 1935 graduate of the University of Iowa. Her first teaching position was at a mission's school in Anniston, Alabama. She returned to Iowa and taught at What Cheer and Woodbine.

On Aug. 16, 1940, Marjorie was united in marriage to Russell B. Hughes. They farmed and were active in the Searsboro and New Sharon areas for nearly 50 years. Marjorie was a member of the United Methodist Church and the P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter AL.

Her memory is honored by her daughter, Margaret McMahan and husband Dennis of Atlanta, GA; her son, Russell Forrest Hughes and wife Sheri of rural Searsboro and her five grandchildren, Daniel Hughes McMahan, David James McMahan, Lauren Saboe Hughes, Erin Susan Hughes and Katelyn Russelle Hughes. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1998 and her daughter, Susan Kay Hughes.
