LOTTIE KUTISH JOHNSTON

It is with real sadness the Herald is called on today to chronicle the death last Friday afternoon, of one of our most attractive and accomplished Grinnell girls, Mrs. Lottie Kutish Johnston, Jr., of Sheffield, Iowa. The death occurred after only a few week's illness, in which the young woman battled bravely to overcome the attack of a serious malady. She had all the assistance that a loving husband and devoted parents and sisters could give her, passing at last into her last sleep mourned by a large circle of friends, attracted to her by her many lovable qualities.

Only four weeks ago Mrs. Johnston closed a short visit to her home here and returned to her home in Sheffield. The malady which led to her death had already attacked her but no one of her closest friends could dream that the end was soon to come.

Lottie Irene Kutish, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kutish, was born at Grinnell, April 30th, 1895. Here she grew to womanhood, and received her education, first in the grammar and high school of Grinnell, graduating in 1913. She then entered Grinnell College, graduating in the class of 1918.

She taught in the high schools of Halfa, Shefield, and Victor, Iowa. Her teaching was done with ability, and enthusiasm, and she made many warm friends in each place. She was always anxious to be useful, and out of this desire, while she was teaching in Sheffield, she organized a Girl Scout Troop and became its leader. It was while teaching at Sheffield that she met and loved C.F. Johnston, Jr., son of Hon. and Mrs. C.F. Johnston, leading citizens and worthy people of that city.

August 30, 1922, at the home of her parents in Grinnell occurred her marriage to Mr. Johnston and their wedded life began with a glorious promise of a happy future. However, a short six months of happiness in her new home terminated with a five weeks' brave battle against a mortal disease, and on Friday, March 2nd, at 2 p.m. she gave up the struggle and was at rest.

Mrs. Johnston was a singularly bright and delightful woman. Always cheerful, true and earnest, she carried sunshine and joy into any group, and her friends will long treasure her memory as a worthy inheritance. She was a member of the Methodist church in Grinnell and when she made Sheffield her home she transferred to the M.E. church in that place and became an active worker in both church and Sunday School.

The funeral service was at Sheffield Sunday, conducted by her pastor, Rev. W.E. Cleworth. Burial was at Sheffield.
