RITES HELD FOR
MR. HAWTHORNE

William Hawthorne, 91, a former resident of Grinnell, died Sept. 24 at the Royal Fontana Nursing Home in Urbana, Ill.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 26, at Stensel's Funeral Home in Saybrook, Ill., with burial in the Mansfield, Ill., cemetery.

He was born Feb. 22, 1883, at Carsontown, Saintfield, County Down, Northern Ireland, the eldest of a family of 10 children born to Robert and Annabella Anderson Hawthorne. He lived in Northern Ireland until he was 27 years old, then came to the U.S. and lived for 13 years near his brother, Alexander, near Mansfield, Ill. He moved to Grinnell in 1923 and back to Illinois in 1962, making his home in Saybrook.

Survivors include a sister, Letitia, of County Down; a brother-in-law, John N. Peak of Grinnell; and other relatives in this area. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers and sisters in Northern Ireland; a sister, Sarah Peak of Grinnell; and a brother, Alexander Hawthorne of Mansfield, Ill.
