EMMA CLAYBROOK

Emma Claybrook, 92, of Grinnell died Friday, March 5, at Friendship Manor.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with burial in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The daughter of James P. and Elizabeth Houseman McIlrath, she was born May 27, 1900, west of Newburg. She attended rural school in Jasper County.

On Aug. 21, 1918, she was married to Ralph Claybrook in Kirksville, Mo. The couple farmed in Jasper, Marshall and Poweshiek counties. They also lived in Tucson, Ariz., and in June 1945 they moved to Grinnell.

Mrs. Claybrook suffered a stroke in 1988 and moved to Dunbar to live with her daughter, Freda Ahrens.

She is survived by two sons, Wendell of Searsboro and Duane of Jonah, Texas; two daughters, Evelyn Osborn of Kellogg and Freda Ahrens of Marshalltown; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mabel Tharp and Lucille Anthony, both of Grinnell; and one brother, Harley McIlrath of Grinnell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one grandson; two sisters, Elizabeth Jack and Ruby McIlrath; two brothers, James and John McIlrath; and her half-sister, Sara Maurer.
