CHARLES H. SWINDAL

Charles H. Swindal, youngest child of William and Mary Swindal, was born in Brooklyn, Iowa, May 16, 1903, and died at his home in Phoenix, Arizona, March 17, 1940 at the age of thirty-six years, 10 months and 1 day.

His early life was spent in Brooklyn with his parents. He attended the Brooklyn public schools and graduated from Brooklyn High school with the class of 1921. Following graduation he attended the University of Iowa.

On Sept. 28, 1923 he was married to Retta Norris, also of Brooklyn and to this union one child, a daughter, Phyllis Jane, was born.

Following his marriage he continued to live in Iowa City until 1935 when because of ill health it was necessary for him to take his family to Phoenix, Arizona, where he has since made his home.

He was a member of the Methodist church, having joined when a senior in high school, a member of Iowa City Lodge No. 4 of A.F. and A.M., a member of the Jessamine Chapter No. 135 of the Order of Eastern Star of Iowa City and a member of Iowa City Lodge No. 44 of I.O.O.F.

He is survived by his wife and his daughter, Phyllis Jane, of Phoenix, Arizona; his mother, Mrs. Mary Swindal, and two sisters, Mrs. Alice Evans and Mrs. Mabel Goff, all of Brooklyn.

For several years he had known of a condition that made death a thing to be expected for him at any time, and yet this knowledge robbed him of none of the zest of living. In spite of a great deal of pain which his condition caused him he was cheerful and patient in his suffering. His going away has brought sadness to his immediate family and to a great host of friends who prized his friendship highly.

Funeral services in charge of the Rev. Fred Miller were held from the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon, Mar. 26, at 2 p.m. Masonic rites were conducted by members of the Iowa City lodge. Burial was in the cemetery at Malcom.

Pall bearers were: John Goff, earl Evans, Quinten Montgomery, Eugene Light, Glenn Fountain of Iowa City, and Homer Simmons of Albia.
