OTTIE E. TUGGLE

Ottie E. Tuggle, 98, of Grinnell died on Thursday, May 7, 2009, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, May 12, at First Baptist Church in Grinnell with the Rev. Ken Wallace, pastor of Westover Baptist Church in Des Moines, and the Rev. Susan Sanning, chaplain of Grinnell Regional Hospice, officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner and vocalists were Milton Severe and Becky Wallace. Casket bearers were Gary and Milton Severe, Greg Billman, Josh Fraser, Mason and James Wallace. Interment was in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Grinnell or to Grinnell Regional Hospice.

She was born Dec. 18, 1910, in Monticello, Ky., to Joseph and Belva Eula Guffey Upchurch. She was raised in Monticello and graduated from Monticello High School. On Aug. 24, 1926, she was united in marriage with Brent Tuggle in Kentucky. The couple lived in Kentucky until moving to Grinnell. She was a homemaker and also worked for over 50 years as a seamstress at the former Morrison and Shults Glove Co. and DeLong Sportswear Company.

She was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Grinnell and enjoyed church activities, gardening and needlework.

She is survived by one granddaughter, Becky Wallace of Urbandale; two grandsons, Gary Severe of Silver City, N.M., and Milton Severe of Grinnell; seven great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; three brothers, Carl, Charles and John Upchurch and one sister, Vela Brown. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Virginia Severe; four brothers, Bob, Clayton, Curtis and Kenneth Upchurch; and three sisters, Bonnie, Velma and Billie.
