The Grinnell (IA) Herald; Dec. 8, 1899

--The funeral of Mrs.Torrey was held at the Presbyterian church Wednesday. The services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Taylor, assisted by Rev. Mr. Clarke of Montezuma, singing by quartette--Maggie Watron, Mrs. Heywood, A.P. Meigs and Fred Hubbert, with Mrs E. P. Raymond as organist. The pall bearers were Wm. McKee of Grinnell, Alex Duffus, Sr., W.W. Wheeler, D. Snyder, S.M. Cady and H.T. Smith. Mrs. Harriet Matilda Edson Torrey was born in Brookfield, Vermont, June 10, 1832. She was married December 4, 1856, to Mr. Milo Torrey. In 1866, Mr. and Mrs. Torry left their native state, going to Wisconsin, and from there in March, 1871, they moved to their late home three miles north of Malcom. In May, 1894, Mr. Torrey, after a lingering illness passed to his "long home," preceding his wife five years. Mrs. Torrey departed this life Sabbath evening, December 3, 1899, at 7 o'clock after an illness of about four weeks. Had she lived one day more the end would have come on her 43rd wedding anniversary. She professed her Master in girlhood in her native state of Vermont, uniting with the Congregational church. On coming to Malcom, she united by letter with the Presbyterian church, and has been, together with her family, a most faithful worker in the same. She will be greatly missed by God's people here. There survive her, two children, Mr. George Torrey, who for a number of years has stayed with her in her declining health, faithfully and devotedly caring for her; and Mrs. Alice Alexander, of Des Moines, Iowa, who was present at the sick bed constantly during her illness. While they mourn the loss of a loving mother, they are not without the glad hope of a happy meeting "some day, some time," on the other shore.
