CYNTHIA DEVILDER LURKENS, 56

Cynthia "Cindy" DeVilder Lurkens, 56, died peacefully in her home, in Punta Gorda, Fla., on September 4, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Cindy was born on May 8, 1950 in Grinnell, to Fred and Margaret Lavent DeVilder. She graduated fro BGM High School in 1968. Cindy was a long-time lab technician with Mid-American Dairymen. In 1976 she married John Lurkens. After living in Cedar Rapids for several years, the couple moved to Connecticut, where Cindy worked in the horticulture industry.

In recent years, Cindy and her husband resided in Punta Gorda, where they were members of the Twin Isles Country Club. Cindy was an avid golfer and with her husband John, earned the title of husband/wife Club Champions in 2004 and 2005. She also enjoyed gardening and crafts.

Her family include her husband, John; stepson Shawn of Cedar Rapids; brothers Jerry DeVilder of Rochester, Minn., David (Margery) DeVilder of Eldora, Jeff (Sara) DeVilder of Estero, Fla.; sisters Mary H. O'Connor of Cedar Rapids, Carolyn (Lyle) Roudabush of Grinnell, Christine (Steven) George of Cedar Rapids, two grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and an infant brother, Ronald.

A Celebration of Life service is planned for 10:00 a.m., September 14, at Larry Taylor Funeral home in Punta Gorda.
