MARTES BATES

Martes Byrdine Braley Veber Bates, 83, of Grinnell died of heart failure Sunday, Dec. 31, at the Mayflower Health Care Center.

A memorial service was conducted Monday, Jan. 8, at Pence Funeral Home in Newton, with the Rev. Cheri L. Doane, interim pastor of the Kellogg Christian Church, officiating. Burial was in Our Silent City Cemetery, Kellogg.

She was the daughter of Elmer S. and Nora Lee Smith Braley and was born July 28, 1917, in rural Kellogg. She was a 1938 graduate of Kellogg High School.

She was married to Elmer Bates in Kellogg and lived in Colorado before moving to Grinnell. During World War II, she worked in an ammuntion plant in Colorado.

She is survived by one brother, Arthur Dale Braley of Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents; her adoptive parents, Byrde and Hort Veber; her husband; one brother, Ross Braley; and one sister, Florence Ross.
