MARCUS M. BELDEN

Marcus M. Belden was born at Galesburg, Ill., Feb. 1, 1863, and moved with his father's family to Stuart, Adair county, Iowa, in 1876, where they made their home on a farm.

In 1896 he was united in marriage to Mariva Brooks of Greenfield, Iowa. They lived on the home farm until 1902 when they moved to Chariton county, Mo. After seven months' residence there the family moved to Barnard, Nodaway county, Missouri, where they lived on a stock farm till the fall of 1905 when they moved to the present home northeast of Grinnell.

Mr. Belden's health had been failing for about three years caused by spleen trouble and January 16, accompanied by his brother he went to Rochester, Minn., hoping to obtain relief.

January 27 the brother returned home leaving Mr. Belden in a hospital apparently as well as usual. The following Friday Mrs. Belden received a letter saying he was not feeling so well, and Saturday morning she started for Rochester. Wednesday afternoon Mr. and Mrs.Belden started home over the Great Western, hoping to reach Grinnell Thursday morning. When morning came he was not able to travel. Everything was done for him that could be done at their room in the Pilgrim hotel at Marshalltown, but he passed away Friday morning, February 7, at 1:00 o'clock.

Mr. Belden's wife, his son, Worth, and daughter, Grace, were all with him at the last.

He has one brother, R.J. Belden, of Dexter, Iowa, and three sisters, Mrs. H.J. Chapman of West Palm Beach, Florida; Mrs. J.W. Barnett of Greenfield, Iowa, and Mrs. C.S. Osborn, of Gooding, Idaho.

The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the home conducted by Rev. E.M. Vittum. Interment was in Hazelwood.

The deceased man had lived here long enough to establish a reputation for strict integrity, and was held in high esteem. Many friends have noted with regret the apparently failing health of Mr. Belden and had hoped with his family that he might find relief at Mayos'.
