GLADYS M. BENSON

Gladys M. Benson, 79, of Grinnell died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at St. Francis Manor.

A funeral service was held Friday, Nov. 8, at Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Stewart, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Pallbearers were John Andes, Nate Benson, Chuck Brooke, Ronald Durr, Bill Gilbreath and Ray Tokle. Burial was in Rock Creek Cemetery in Jasper County. Memorial contributions may be directed to First Baptist Church.

She was born June 12, 1923, in Rock Creek Township, Jasper County, the daughter of Arthur and Delphena Decatur Durr, and was raised in Jasper County. She was a 1941 graduate of Grinnell High School. She was married Jan. 2, 1946, in Newton to Charles (Ronnie) Benson and the couple farmed in the Grinnell and Kellogg areas. She moved to Grinnell in 1995 and has been a resident of St. Francis Manor since 2000.

She was a member of First Baptist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She also had been a volunteer for the Grinnell Senior Center and for several years was a bus driver for the Career Development Center.

She is survived by one son Rick of Cedar Rapids; two daughters Sandi Benson, Costa Mesa, Calif., and Becky McKinnis, Hutchinson, Kan.; two sisters, Lucille Yanacek of Cedar Rapids and Bette Anderson of Bell Gardens, Calif., and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother LeRoy Durr and two sisters, Irene Sparks and Thelma Taylor.
