Obituary dated June 10, 1924

MRS. ELIZA JANE CRAIG
CLOSES USEFUL LIFE

Mrs. Eliza Jane Jillbell Craig was born in Newbury, South Carolina, eighty-two years ago and died on Friday morning, June 6th, at the Community hospital.

Her father, wishing his children to be raised in the North, placed them with some Quakers in Ohio where, he thought, they would get the best possible care and training. She was four years of age when, in a mover's wagon which was the mode of transportation in those days, she left her southern home for Ohio. Here she grew to womanhood, receiving her education at Wilberforce University. In 1859 she removed from Ohio to West Liberty, Iowa, where, in the following year, she was married to George Craig. To this union there were born three children: Mrs. John Lucas, Mrs. Solomon Brown and Mrs. L.A. Renfrow. The family subsequently removed to Oskaloosa where they lived until 1887 when they came to Grinnell where they spent the rest of their lives. Her husband preceded her in death only six weeks.

Mrs. Craig adopted the Quaker faith when a child and kept that faith all her life. She was of a retired and quiet disposition, and was a devoted and loving mother, wife and friend. She is survived by her three daughters, thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L.A. Renfrow on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. E.W. Cross and assisted by Rev. John C. Lincoln. Mrs. Bertha Walton and Mrs. Daisy Baker sang, "Asleep in Jesus," and "Abide with Me." Pallbearers were the three sons-in-law of Mrs. Craig, John Brown Lucas, Solomon Brown and L.A. Renfrow, and Siebert Dove, Gordon Kitchen and Alphonse Heningburg. Interment was in Hazelwood cemetery.
