MRS. SOPHIA MARIA KIRSCHSTEIN

Kellogg Enterprise: Sophia Maria Egers-Kirschstein was born at Panzow, Mecklenburg Stralitz, Germany, May 9, 1840. Was married to John Henry Kirschstein on June 4, 1862, and died at Kellogg, Iowa, August 3, 1913, aged 73 years, 2 months and 25 days.

With her husband she came to America in August, 1863, and located in Mokena, Will county, Illinois. After a three years residence there they came to Iowa and located on Sugar Creek, Poweshiek county, while the Rock Island railway was building westward, and as soon as the road was completed to Kellogg came to this place, where Mr. Kirschstein bought the old stage coach station located just north of the present railway station. This building was moved to the location which has been the Kirchstein home for more than 45 years.

After a long, busy and useful life she died as she lived--honored, trusted and loved. She reared her own monument while she lived in the hearts of all who knew her. Her life was completed if work all done and well done constitutes completion. Her Christian life was beautiful, and through all the vicissitudes and sorrows that she met in the way, her faith never wavered. But she has gone, and today the grave hides from sight all that is mortal of a true and noble woman.

Mrs. Kirschstein was the mother of nine children--three, William, Anna and Helen, as well as her husband, John Henry Kirschstein, preceded her to the heavenly home. There remain to mourn the loss of a devoted mother: Henry J., of Omaha, Nebraska; Herman C. of Tacoma, Washington; Frank T. and Charles A. of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Lewis W. and Miss Viola M. of Kellogg, all of whom were present at the funeral.

The funeral services were held at the Lutheran church on Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. A.C. Zellinger. The interment was in the Kellogg cemetery.
