DIED
-------

J.M. BYERLY

J.M. Byerly died on Sunday evening about 6 o'clock at the home of Miss Reed, 721 Broad St., where he had a room. The funeral will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Samuel Nelson home on Fifth Avenue. Rev. N.J. Peterson will conduct the services and the Elks will have charge of the services at the grave. Mr. Byerly was aged 59 years, 11 months and 7 days.

Mr. Byerly had been in poor health for some time, but death came very suddenly from heart disease. He had been up town and when he returned complained of feeling very badly. He was helped to his room and had started to take off his shoes when he called for help. He was laid on the bed and expired almost immediately.

For a number of years Mr. Byerly was active in the business life of Grinnell and though of late years his business has kept him a way most of the time he still kept in touch with Grinnell by frequent visits and retained his large circle of friends here.

Mr. Byerly was born on a farm west of Grinnell on October 23, 1857, and grew to manhood there. In early manhood he proved up on a claim in South Dakota and spent about two years there. Returning to Grinnell he engaged for about ten years in the retail grocery business on the corner where the Citizens National Bank now stands, and after selling his business, he went on the road for Haskins Bros., soap manufacturers, of Sioux City.

He is survived by a son, Henry Byerly, of Denver, Colo., two sisters, Mrs. John Longshore and Mrs. Buckley, both of Longmont, Colo., and a brother, Al., of Newburg. Henry Byerly, with his wife and son, arrive tonight to attend the funeral.
