MRS. AGNES
PHELPS DIES
AT AGE OF 98

Funeral Services Friday
At 2:30 P.M., At
Congregational Church

Mrs. Agnes L. Phelps, whose life goes back into the very beginnings of Grinnell, passed away at 9:15 o'clock Tuesday morning in St. Francis hospital, where she had been cared for for the past two years and seven months. She had attained the advanced age of 98 years, 10 months and 12 days.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon from the Congregational church, conducted by Rev. Walter K. North, the interim pastor.

Mrs. Phelps was born in Vermont Dec. 5, 1845. Her maiden name was Agnes Farr. She came to Iowa with her parents when she was 17 years old and the family resided in the Gilman neighborhood. While attending college here she met Loyal C. Phelps, member of a pioneer Grinnell family, who was engaged in business here and was married to him after his return from service in the Union army during the Civil war. Two sons, Carl, for many years proprietor of the Metropolitan restaurant, in Grinnell, and Landon were born to Mr. and Mrs. Phelps. Both preceded her in death and her husband died many years ago.

She is survived by seven grandchildren, Clayton L. Phelps of Grinnell, Hoyt, now serving in the army, Mrs. Dorothy Phelps Johnson of Cherokee, and Landon Phelps, Virgene and Mark and Mildred Phelps, all of Chicago. Mrs. Fannie Phelps Johnson of Cheyenne, Wyoming, is a niece.

Mrs. Phelps made her home in Chicago for 25 years, but returned to Grinnell after the death of her husband and had lived here ever since.

Although her advancing years and feebleness have kept her from taking any active part in Grinnell life, she retained her mental alertness to a remarkable degree and loved to talk about the Grinnell which she knew in her younger and more active days.
