AN OBITUARY OF JOHN R. NICHOLL

John Robert Nicholl, son of Robert and Mary Nicholl, was born in county Antrim, Ireland, Sept. 17, 1856, and passed away at the Community hospital in Grinnell May 14, 1934, aged 47 years, seven months and twenty-seven days. He came when seven years of age with his parents to this country and settled on a farm near Newburg. He was married to Miss May Pearce at Grinnell on March 19, 1907. To this union were born two children, Raymond and Vera, both still living at home, who with the widow, survives him. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary Nicholl, who is 88 years of age.

His father's family consisted of seven children. One died in infancy. Andy passed away in 1918, and his father died May 23, 1926. Those surviving besides the mother: Mrs. D.H. Craven of Kellogg, Mrs. John Madill and Mrs. Ralph Rutherford of Grinnell and Mrs. Ray Pepoon, of Geddis, South Dakota. Mrs. Pepoon visited her brother and helped care for him ten days prior to his being taken to the hospital at Iowa City three weeks ago. From the hospital at Iowa City Mr. Nicholl was moved to the Grinnell hospital, where it was found he could not recover.

Mr. Nicholl was baptized in the Presbyterian church in Cullybackey, Ireland. He spent his life as a farmer in the Gilman vicinity. The last few years of his life had been greatly handicapped by failing health. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the late home in charge of Rev. J.A. Gaskey of Montour, who preached the funeral sermon for the father of the deceased in 1926. Pallbearers were five brothers-in-law, Greely Craven, John Madill, Ralph Rutherford, George Pearce and Frank Pearce and a cousin, J.M. Paul. Flowers were cared for by Myrtle Pearce, Evelyn and Genevieve Craven, and Mavis Schultz.

Relatives attending the services from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Bartlett, Miles; Stanley Madill, Moline, Ill.; Mrs. Ella Brownell, Pasadena, Calif.; Mrs. Ray Main, Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Rutherford and Mrs. Myron Lacey, DeWitt; and many other relatives from nearby towns. Burial was made in Prairie View cemetery at Gilman.
