MEMORIAL HELD

Lucia M. Landis, 87, of 96 Fourth Ave., Grinnell, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, at her home.

A memorial service was conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Grinnell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Raymond C. Lott, pastor of the church, officiating. Mrs. Landis donated her body to medical science.

Memorials may be made to the Iowa Commission for the Blind or the Grinnell United Methodist Church. Friends may call the Smith Funeral Home for additional information.

The daughter of John M. and Sarah C. Burris Howell, she was born on Jan. 24, 1900, in Davis City. She attended Davis City schools and later graduated from Lamoni High School.

She was employed by Western Union Telegraph in Des Moines for eight years. She was married to Arthur M. Landis on Nov. 4, 1921, at Davis City. The couple farmed in the Weldon area until 1945, then moved to Weldon where they operated a general store and bottle-gas business.

Mrs. Landis was a member and taught Sunday school at the Weldon Methodist Church. She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star, an officer in the Weldon P.T.A. and Community Club, and served as treasurer of the Weldon Town Council and School Board.

Following her husband's death, she came to Grinnell 1977 where she was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and the Historical and Literary Club.

She is survived by three daughters, Sarah Strohm of Brooklyn, Jerry Cory of Akron, Ohio, and Nancy Hendrickson of Grinnell; one son, Arthur M. Jr. of Westfield, Mass.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; five infant grandchildren; and four brothers and three sisters, Leigh, Burris, George and Bert Howell, Neal Andrew, Myrta Frazier, and a sister in infancy.
