OBITUARY

Leatitia (Berkshire) Owings was a native of Ohio in 1857, born on the 6th of June 1833. She came to Iowa in 1857, and in 1862 was united in marriage with McKinzie Owings in Jasper county. In 1875 she with her husband and son went to California where they resided until 1885. Returning to Iowa they again located at Rushville, Jasper County and remained there until two years ago when they bought property in Grinnell and have since then made this their home.

Mrs. Owings has been in poor health for a number of years, and since coming here her decline has been constant, and for the last six months rapid, last Saturday she was called to yield to the inevitable and close her eyes to the scenes of this world to open them in heaven. In early life she became a christian and identified herself with the Methodist Episcopal church; since 1864 she was a member of the Rushville class and at her request her body was taken there close to her old home for interment. Coming to Grinnell she joined the church of her choice here and was faithful to all its interests. She was a model wife, a kind friend, a devout christian, a loyal Methodist. "She rests from her labors and her works do follow her." Funeral services were held at the home on Tuesday morning conducted by the Rev. A.W. Haines a former pastor of the deceased, assisted by the Rev. W.G. Wilson; the M.E. Church choir furnishing appropriate music.
