CARRIE MCDOWELL ALLEN

Carrie Melinda McDowell, the daughter of John and Caroline McDowell, was born October 1, 1872, on a farm three miles south of Searsboro, Iowa. Her early life was spent in this same community, where she attended the country school.

In the fall of 1890 she was united in marriage with Irvin Allen, and to this union were born two children, Tom, now living in Montezuma, Iowa, and Blanche, deceased.

Minnie and Irv, as she and her husband were known, operated a farm in the Forest Home area for many years. In 1932 they moved to the Winona, Missouri area and it was here that her husband passed away. For the past several years she made her home with her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Kline of Searsboro.

After a short illness, she passed away on July 2, 1963, at the Community hospital in Grinnell, at the age of 90 years, nine months and one day.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin; her daughter, Blanche; a grandson, Harold Allen, and four brothers--Pomeroy, George, and Volney of Searsboro, and Carey of Mar Vista, Calif.

She is survived by her son, Tom, and daughter-in-law, Anna Mae Allen; a son-in-law, Ben Birkey of Shelbyville, Missouri; three grandchildren, Charles Allen of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Ray Rice of McLean, Va., and Mrs. Billy Moore of rural Grinnell; seven great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Lota Kline of Searsboro; many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

Services were conducted by Rev. Myrtle C. Lee at the Harden Funeral Home in New Sharon, Iowa, on July 5, 1963, at 2 p.m. Interment was at Winona, Missouri, July 6, 1963, at 10:30 a.m.
