Almira McDonough

Almira McDonough, 88, of Grinnell died Friday, March 10, 2006, at St. Francis Manor.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 15, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell with the Rev. Steven Jasch, pastor of the church, officiating. Organist will be Margaret Amo. Casket bearers will be her grandchildren, Brian, Scott, Kyle and Bradley McDonough, Paul, Charles and Heather Hildreth, Eric and Tad Van Zante and Melinda Vander Velden. Friends may call at Smith Funeral Home Tuesday beginning at noon with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church.

She was born June 12, 1917, on the family farm in Fremont Township, Butler County, Iowa, to William and Augusta Obermoeller Nieman. She graduated from Garnavillo High School with the class of 1934, then in 1939 received a degree from the Marshalltown School of Nursing. She was married on Jan. 6, 1940, to Glenn Andrew McDonough at her parents' home in Clarksville. They operated a grain and livestock farm northeast of Grinnell and she worked for a brief time at the former St. Francis Hospital in Grinnell.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, and enjoyed reading, gardening and her grandchildren.

She is survived by one son, Howard McDonough of Grinnell; two daughters Carolyn Hildreth of Ankeny and Barbara Van Zante of Grinnell; ten grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and one sister, Vineva Yover of El Paso, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son Byron; her parents; three brothers, William, Galen and Nathan Nieman; and one sister, Ila Henning.
