Carl McDonough

Carl McDonough, 92, formerly of this area, died early Thursday morning, Aug. 16, 2012, at his Florida home just a few days short of his 93rd birthday. A private burial for family was held Aug. 20 at Forest Meadows Cemetery in Gainesville, Fla.

He was born in Killduff, the youngest of four boys. When he was eight, his family moved to a larger farm in Grinnell.

After high school graduation, he joined the U.S. Air Corps and served as Master Sergeant with the 8th Air Force 100th Bomb Group at Thorge-Abbott Air Force Base of Dover, England, during WWII. While he was still in the states, stationed at Kearney, Neb., he used a seven-day furlough to return home to marry Eline and the two were together for 67 years until her death in 2011.

When the war was over, they lived in Marshalltown, where Carl worked at Lennox Manufacturing and was co-owner of C&R Refrigeration. In 1956, they moved to Gainesville, Fla. Carl worked as maintenance manager with Sears for 23 years. Upon retirement in 1980, he started a locksmith and small home maintenance repair business. He also worked as deputy with Alachua County voting precinct for more than 10 years.

He was a lifetime member of the 8th Air Force Historical Society, 100th Bomb Group, 350th Sqn.; a 67-year member of the American Legion; and belonged to the First Christian Church for 67 years. He was an avid sports fan.

He is survived by his daughter, Diane, and a brother, Homer, of Grinnell.
