OBITUARY

SUMNER MERRITT BUMP

(Contributed)

Sumner Merritt Bump, long-time resident of Burlingame, died Sunday at his Canyon Road home from a heart attack. He is survived by his widow, *Margaret, two daughters, Mrs. Fred J. Davis of Burlingame and Mrs. Diran Bodenhorn of Park Forest, Ill., a son, George Christian Bump, Stanford, Calif., two brothers, Glenn Barker Bump, Stockton, Calif., and Edwin E. Bump, San Antonio, Texas, and two sisters, Mrs. Burton Morris, Newton, Ia., and Mrs. Harry Horn, San Jose, Calif.

Mr. Bump was born in 1884 in Grinnell and attended Grinnell College. He had lived in San Mateo County 45 years and in Burlingame 26 years. His career in the field of civil engineering, lumbering, and mining business began in 1914, and included work at Pescadero and Pidgeon Point as well as construction of the railroad at Eel River and the jetty at Eureka. During World War I he served as captain with the 20th Engineers Corps. After the war, he built and managed a lumber mill at Susanville, and also spent two years in the same business in the Philippine Islands.

He was a member of American Legion Post No. 163, the Sequoia Chapter of the Audubon Society, the State Historical Society, the Burlingame and Peninsula Art Associations and the Congregational church in San Mateo. Since his retirement eight years ago he had engaged in his hobby of painting in oils. This led recently to his establishment of the Art Appreciation Library dedicated to the bringing of beauty to patients in hospitals and sanitoriums in the Bay Area. Under his plan, exhibits of works of both professional and amateur artists are hung for the enjoyment of patients and hospital staff alike. He had received letters of commendation and appreciation from the San Francisco Art Commission, Crystal Springs Home, the San Mateo County TB Sanatorium, Agnews State Hospital, and other sanatoriums.

Gifts in memory of Mr. Bump may be sent to the Art Appreciation Library Committee, care of Mr. Frank McGary, 1117 Cambridge Road, Burlingame, to continue the work he started.
