Mrs. Starr Grew to Womanhood Here and Many Friends Mourn Her Death.
---------------------------

Many Grinnell friends regret the death of Mrs. Ernest Starr, who died Monday at her home where her husband is pastor of the Geneseo Church in northeast Tama county. Mrs. Starr was in her girlhood one of Grinnell's most attractive young women and many friends of those days will sincerely regret to know of her death.

Burial is in Hazelwood today, preceded by services at the M.E. church.

Gertrude E. Bump was born at Fontana, Kansas, December 1, 1881. When she was six years of age she came with her parents to Grinnell where she grew to womanhood. She attended the Grinnell High School and Iowa Wesleyan college, fitting herself for life's larger service. For three years she taught school. On November 4, 1903, she was united in marriage to Ernest J. Starr, thereby making twenty-five years of beautiful home life where four fine children have felt the power of a noble christian character.

Five years ago Mrs. Starr suffered for nine months from severe heart trouble. From this she never fully recovered. She was in the usual health on last Monday, April 8th. At five-thirty in the afternoon she was stricken and at seven-forty she had slipped away to be with God. She is survived by her husband, the Rev. E.J. Starr, by two daughters, Mrs. Lois M. Bartholomew, of Conrad, Iowa, and Mary Frances, a junior in High School; by two sons, Robert M., a senior in Upper Iowa University, and Everett J. at home. She is also survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Bump of Grinnell; by three brothers, Ernest Bump, Monroe, Iowa, F.S. Bump of Waterloo, W.R. Bump of Grinnell; by one sister, Mrs. C.A. Ivins of West Frankfort, Ill.; and by two grandchildren.

Gertrude was reared in the Methodist church of Grinnell growing up through the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Epworth Leagues and the Sunday School into the rich understanding of church life. She early united with the church and all her life was an enthusiastic worker in all phases of church acitivity. Her ambition was beyond her strength and she never knew how to spare herself. She loyally supported her husband in his work when he was with the Y.M.C.A. and with equal devotion through nineteen years of parsonage life she gave herself without stint to the arduous duties of a pastor's life. She was an exemplary daughter, a loyal friend and sister, a devoted wife and mother.

Services were held Thursday, April 11th in the Geneseo church conducted by the Superintendent of the Waterloo District, Dr. F.C. Witzigman and Dr. Glenn F. Rowley of Cedar Falls. Further services were held in her home church at Grinnell Friday, Apr. 12th conducted by the Rev. George Blagg and Rev. E.M. Vittum. Interment was made in Grinnell's beautiful cemetery, Hazewood.
