Father M.J. Hannon Pays Eloquent Tribute to a Good Man Gone On.
----------------------

Jack Carroll has passed away, but he leaves for his friends the memory of a kind hearted, generous, charitable man, one who lived to make his friends cheerful and to pass on to others the words and impulses which make life worth living.

For thirty-five years Jack Carroll was a friend of the writer. During that period we never heard him say an unkind word and we can not think that he had unkind thoughts of others. He was generous, loyal and true to those who knew him, and his quiet, unobtrusive manner always brought him a welcome from those who honored him for his worthy and generous character.

We presume that measured in worldy goods he never acquired much wealth but in the hearts of his friends he will be remembered as a worthy citizen, a loyal husband and a friend without a fault. The writer knew Mr. Carroll when he was just growing into manhood. The writer knew his kind hearted and generous father before him and when the history of this man's life is written it will be said of him that he was a credit to his country and to the community in which he lived.

Lucius John Carroll was born in Jasper county Iowa, November 8, 1868, and passed away Sunday morning, March 30, 1929, just ten days after the death of his brother Cyrus. He had reached the age of sixty years, four months and 22 days. His father and mother, Matthew and Hannah Dorgan Carroll came to Iowa from Dublin, Ireland. His wife, born Honora Mary Keefe, survives him.

Funeral services were conducted at St. Mary's Monday morning at nine o'clock, a beautiful service and a tribute to the man who had so suddenly left his work in this world for a better work in the world beyond. Bearers at the services were nephews of the deceased man.

Mr. Hannon, during the services, gave beautiful testimony to the character of the deceased man. He was an active member of the Board of Trustees and a member of the building committee of St. Mary's church as well as a liberal contributor. He did his part in promoting the cause of Christianity and of better citizenship. Mr. Hannon referred not only to the work which the church was trying to do to bring salvation to the souls of men, but also to the private personal character of the deceased man as the pastor knew him. The words were an eloquent tribute not only to the church but to one of its honored and trusted members.

The church was filled with those who had gathered to do honor to their friend, mostly neighbors who knew him and loved him for his generosity and his courtesy. Many men have done nobly but few may be found who have contributed more to the calm, beautiful joy of living than did this quiet, humble citizen, L.J. Carroll.
