The Grinnell (IA) Herald; 11 Sept. 1885

DIED.

At Grinnell, Iowa, Sept. 8, 1885, Mrs. Amanda M. Hascall, aged 58 years.

Deceased was born in New Haven, Vt., March 8th, 1827, and came to this city from Malone, N.Y., in 1869. Her mother, Mrs. Amanda M. Hull, died at the age of 31, when she was but six months of age. She was then adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Belding, who both lived to a good old age, Mr. Belding dying at 78, and Mrs. Belding at the age of 91, in 1880, at Malone, N.Y. The deceased was married to Ralph Hascall in 1849. A daughter, Alice, was born in 1851, who died in infancy. Mr. Hascall died of consumption, at Malone, N.Y., aged 47, leaving one son, Charles H., of Chicago, Ill., a cousin of the Grinnells of this city. During the lingering illness of Mrs. Hascall, all that was possible was done to stay the progress of disease and minister to her comfort. Her main desire throughout her illness was to have her son remain beside her to comfort her, as an only son can comfort a dying mother, and her wishes in this respect were fulfilled, her son having arrived here a few days after she was taken ill, and remained watching and caring for her during six long months of weary suffering. She died as she had lived, trusting in Him who is ruler over all things. She was always found willing and ready to minister to the wants of the sick and visit those that were afflicted, and the community in which she was best known mourn the loss of a noble and true friend and kind neighbor, her son and relatives consoling themselves with the thought that they have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community. The funeral services were conducted by Dr. Safford, Wednesday afternoon, at the residence of Hon. J.B. Grinnell, the house being thronged by those who came to pay their last respects to the memory of a loving relative and dear friend.
