CLAUDIS AXTELL, 98

Claudis Grier Axtell, 98, of Deep River, passed away Nov. 1, 2001, at the Montezuma Nursing and Rehab Center. Born July 14, 1903, at Deep River, he was the son of Charles E. and Elma (Grier) Axtell.

Private graveside services were held at the Golden Rod Cemetery in Deep River with Pastor Boyd Sparks officiating. Watts Funeral Home in Montezuma was in charge of arrangements.

Claudis lived most of his life in Deep River with the exception of two years when he lived in Omaha, Neb., and his last five years, first, at Diamond Life and later at Montezuma Nursing and Rehab Center. He was a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church and later the United Church of Deep River. He was a 50+ charter member of the Masons.

Claudis was united in marriage to Marion Assian of Stanton on Sept. 4, 1929. They lived in Omaha for two years befroe moving back to Deep River where he joined his father and brother Erwin in the lumber yard business. He continued this business until 1972.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Marion in 1984; his parents; one sister, Laura Ann and two brothers, Erwin Ogle and Charles Wendell.

Claudis is survived by one sister Dorothy Duane Anders of Cedar Rapids, and Gertrude Lundholm of Rock Island; nieces and nephews, Jeannette and James Winegarden, Blaine and Lillian Axtell, Charlie and Jean Axtell, and Chris Moode, Del and Jan Axtell, DeAnn Saska and Gae and Bill Kraes of the United States; and Martha Jansson and family of Sweden.

Memorials may be made to the United Church or the Deep River Fire Department.
