L. SAMPSON DIES AT 86; RITES TODAY

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today at Smith Funeral Home for Mr. Lewis J. Sampson, 86, of 717 East Street, Grinnell. Mr. Sampson died early Tuesday morning at a local nursing home where he had made his home recently.

The Rev. Chester E. Custer, minister of the Grinnell Methodist church, officiated at the services. Organist was Mrs. Willard Heffner.

Pallbearers were Max Arnold, James Peak, Dale Saunders, Kenneth Saunders, Raymond Saunders and Richard Saunders.

Burial was in Hazelwood cemetery.

Mr. Sampson was born May 28,1880, in Grinnell to George and Mary Stowe Sampson. He attended the local schools, graduating from Grinnell high school.

On April 20, 1904, Mr. Sampson was united in marriage with Garnet Davis in Grinnell. Five children were born to the couple, three of whom survive.

Mr. Sampson graduated from the American College of Mechano Therapy in Chicago in 1908. He practiced in physio-therapy in Rockford, Ill., until 1912. He then attended the Weltmer School of Suggesto Therapy at Nevada, Mo., until 1914, when he returned to Grinnell and worked with his father in the construction business.

Following his father's death, Mr. Sampson continued in the building construction business until 1942 when he was employed with the former York Lumber Co.

Mr. Sampson enjoyed circus history and magic and had written several articles on circus history in "Bandwagon" publication and also had performed on the stage as a magician.

He was a member of the Grinnell Methodist church.

Survivors include three children--Lynn Sampson of Rock Island, Ill., Mrs. Robert (Geraldine) Peak of Topeka, Kan., and Gerald P. Sampson of Grinnell; seven grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife; two children, Genevieve and Carroll; and one sister, Mrs. Cora Pegram.
