THOMAS DAVIS

Thomas Davis was born in Lewis county,, New York, on the 20th day of June, 1844, and died at his home east of Grinnell Jan. 10, 1902.

From his New York home he moved to Illinois at the age of 22 where he resided until he moved with his wife and two sons to Grinnell eleven years ago.

Mr. Davis was a large, strong man, one of the vigorous successful men who have developed the Mississippi Valley. Hard working, honest, of good business judgment, he succeeded in providing for the needs and comforts of his family and in making his own of the finest and best improved farms in this part of the country.

Seventeen years ago his spine was injured by an accident and while he seemingly recovered the evil effects of the injury remained with him. Four years ago he took to his bed with an acute attack induced by his former spinal injury from which he was never to rise. The last years of his life have been years of such suffering as few ever experience. Yet through it all he bore up with great fortitude and patience. During these days of suffering his wife and sons have been constant attendants at his bedside and have done what they could to make his sufferings the more endurable.

He was a good neighbor and friend, loved by wife and sons who are left to mourn their loss.

The funeral was conducted from the house at two o'clock Sunday afternoon by the Rev E.M. Vittum and the body laid to rest in Hazelwood cemetery.
