CALEB A. HASKIN

While sitting in his chair at his home, two miles northeast of Ferguson, Caleb A. Haskin, aged 86, one of the pioneers of the southern part of the county, was stricken with neuralgia of the heart, and died a short time afterwards without regaining consciousness. Mr. Haskin had become quite feeble during recent years, and last week suffered two slight attacks of neuralgia that further weakened him.

Fourteen years ago Mr. Haskin lost a leg by an accident that came close to costing him his life. While stamping out a fire in one of his fields his foot was burned badly, blood poisoning set in and the leg had to be amputated to save his life.

With the exception of a few years he spent in Grinnell Mr. Haskin had lived on the farm where he died for almost sixty years. He homesteaded the land from the government and added to it from time to time until he became a large land owner.

Caleb A. Haskin was born in Addison county, Vermont, Nov.16, 1825. His parents moved to Monroe county, New York, when he was a small boy. When a lad of 15 years Mr. Haskin came west to LaGrange county, Indiana, and later to Elkhart county, Indiana. At the latter place he married Miss Rebecca Lacey, on May 27, 1849.

Mr. Haskin came west in 1853 and settled on the farm near Ferguson. Two years later his family joined him. In the fall of 1870 the family left the farm and went to Grinnell to live, remaining for six years, only to return to the old home place.

Mrs. Haskin died twenty-seven years ago and a few years later Mr. Haskin married Mrs. Elizabeth Bibb Anderson who survives him. Four children were born of the first marriage, two of them, Albert R. Haskin, of New York City, and Mrs. C.F. Ricker, of Grinnell, are living. Mrs. Ricker formerly lived in this city. One son, R.A. Haskin, was born of the second marriage, and now lives in Los Angeles.--Times-Republican.
