MARJORY SMILEY

Marjory K. Smiley, 96, of Grinnell died Tuesday, Dec. 22, at St. Francis Manor.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Homer Perry of the Mayflower officiating. Organist was Alice Renaud, and pallbearers were Charles Frese, Theodore Frese, James Jiras, Raymond Jiras, Steven Scheetz and Thomas Scheetz. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

She was the daughter of Jacob and Mary Elizabeth Frese Warthman and was born Feb. 28, 1896, in Oxford. She was a graduate of Oxford High School. She taught for one year in rural school and later taught fifth and sixth grades at Malcom and Mitchellville. She attended Drake University and Coe College and returned to Oxford to care for her mother and teach in the Oxford schools.

She was married to Thomas Smiley Dec. 23, 1925, in Chicago. The couple lived in Alden where Mr. Smiley was superintendent of schools.

In February 1929, she and her husband came to the Grinnell area to live on an acreage west of town. They managed the Smiley Farms and operated a chicken hatchery for a number of years.

In 1958, her sister, Elsie L. Winchell, came to live with her, and Mrs. Smiley cared for her until her death.

Mrs. Smiley was a member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational, the Priscilla Club and the Neighborhood Club.

There are no immediate survivors. She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Dewey Warthman; her sister, Elsie Winchell; and her parents.
