BERTHA SMILEY SERVICES HELD

Bertha Shutts Smiley, 90, a former professor of piano a Grinnell College, died Monday at the Mayflower Home where she had been a long-time resident.

Her teaching at Grinnell began in 1907 and continued to 1926. Following that, she taught piano and chamber music at Carleton College until her retirement.

Mrs. Smiley was a graduate of Oberlin School of Music and later studied under Rosina Lhevinne in Europe and Rudolph Ganz in the U.S.

Her professional career included frequent concert appearances as a piano soloist. She also played viola in string quartets at both Grinnell and Carleton colleges.

Mrs. Smiley was preceded in death in 1943 by her husband, Charles Newton Smiley, who was Benedict professor of latin languages and literature at Grinnell College and later professor of Latin at Carleton College, Northfield, Minn.

The couple had no children. Several nieces survive. Mrs. Smiley was born April 14, 1883, at Waterloo, the daughter of Harvey and Rinda Corson Shutts.

Services for Mrs. Smiley were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Denison Chapel, Mayflower Home, with the Rev. Newell E. Davis and the Rev. Ralph Beebe officiating. Pianist was Norman Goodbrod.

Burial was in the Elmwood Cemetery at Waterloo, with the James-Schalinske Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
